Summary

To serve the students and staff on campus in an atmosphere of efficiency, cleanliness and warmth while helping to advance the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf. Under the direction of the Lead Custodian, performs a variety of cleaning work in assigned offices, classrooms, restrooms, or other buildings; cleaning work includes but is not limited to floor and window care, stain removal, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, refilling soap and paper towel dispensers, and disinfecting classroom items; assists in maintenance activities and performs other related duties as assigned. It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and receptive manner.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include the Following (Other duties may be assigned.)

 

  • Comply with all NMSD policies as they apply to this job assignment.
  • Must be able to work weekends and/or nights to support school activities and events as needed.
  • Observe and make suggestions for repairs, alterations, changes, and equipment as needed in the school.
  • Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards.
  • Extensive floor care as needed.
  • Extracts stains/soiled areas on carpets as needed.
  • Helps Lead Custodian to perform maintenance work on Custodial equipment such as vacuums, tile scrubbers, floor buffers, and carpet extractors.
  • Cleans assigned school facilities, keeping them safe, and free of obstructions.
  • Keep the buildings neat, clean, and safe for the purpose of conducting school activities.
  • Vacuum and sweep thoroughly all assigned rooms, corridors, halls, and offices at least once each day. Floors should be stripped and waxed as needed throughout the school year.
  • Mop, clean and disinfect fixtures, mirrors and stalls, and replenishes bathroom supplies.
  • Empties wastebaskets, and transports trash and waste to disposal area.
  • Replenishes bathroom supplies.
  • Cleans campus classroom ovens and communal kitchens.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or GED with a minimum of one (1) year progressive Custodial experience. Must be willing to learn, or demonstrate and perform an understanding of proper cleaning, floor stripping, buffering, waxing, polishing, maintenance of custodial equipment, and stain removal.

 

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Proficiency in American Sign Language or willingness to learn. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions, read, interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and blueprints, and make estimates of time and materials.

 

Sign Language: Sign language skills at hire are preferred. The applicant does not need to have sign language skills at hire but will be required to demonstrate progressive sign language acquisition and participate in sign language classes offered at NMSD.

 

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

 

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This job requires standing for long periods as well as stooping, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing and climbing. Able to work a flexible schedule with early or late hours, including weekends.
