Summary

The work involves responsibility for overseeing and supervising school buildings and grounds security functions both during and after normal school hours. The primary emphasis in this position is to maintain a safe school and work environment; in addition, to deter vandalism, breakage and unwarranted loitering on school property. The incumbent has responsibility for planning and overseeing both vehicle and foot traffic flow in and around school buildings and for monitoring that only authorized personnel are on campus in accordance with established procedures. It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and receptive manner, while helping to advance the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Routinely, patrols assigned areas on foot or in a vehicle to ensure personal, building, and equipment security.
  • Examine doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure.
  • Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs
  • Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
  • Protect confidentiality of records and information about staff
  • Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by their supervisor.
  • Maintains the orderly flow of automobile traffic in the parking lot.
  • To assist in maintaining a safe and orderly environment in areas of the school, parking lot and grounds.
  • Reports maintenance concerns to appropriate school personnel.
  • Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
  • Assists with fire drills and other emergency building evacuations.
  • Maintains security records, logs and reports.
  • Abides by Security Department guidelines, directives and post orders.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Attends and successfully completes all staff development training as required by the Security Department.
  • Notifies the administrative staff, police, fire department, or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations.
  • Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
  • Provide escort services for visitors, students, staff, faculty, and individuals responsible for transportation of monies to or from university depositories as required.
  • Provide public assistance, including lockout services and information.
  • Watch for and reports irregularities, such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unlocked; sounds alarm in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
  • Performs and assists with fire, lockdown, shelter in place and evacuation drills.
  • Perform periodic checks of boilers to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required.
  • Prepare routine, standardized reports.
  • May be required to drive a school vehicle, ability to provide safe and efficient transportation for school community and visitors.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Ability to resolve individual complaints and concerns.
  • Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Must be able to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to drive motor vehicles.

  • Skilled in utilizing building security and lock systems and procedures.
  • Monitors cameras, alarms and gates.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must possess a valid New Mexico driver's license.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education and/or Experience: High School graduate /GED with at least two (2) years of directly related experience required.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Must be able to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Sign Language: The applicant does not need to have sign language skills at hire but will be required to demonstrate progressive sign language acquisition and participate in sign language classes offered at NMSD. Required to become proficient in American Sign Language.
  • Reasoning Ability: Judgment and initiative are frequently exercised.
  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software.
