Summary

The Library Resource Teacher Specialist works with teachers and other educators to build and strengthen connections between student information and information resources. Provides leadership and expertise in selecting, acquiring, evaluating, and organizing information resources in all formats. Empowers students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information, works collaboratively with members of the learning community to define the goals of the school library program, and guides and directs all activities related to it.

 

The Library Resource Teacher Specialist creates an environment where collaboration and creative problem-solving thrive. The school library resource specialist is an excellent communicator who instills enthusiasm in others. The school library resource specialist demonstrates the role of a visible and active leader within the school community and a professional member of the school library community by understanding the skills of the 21st-century learner.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)

• Oversees the library, resource room, and library staff.
• Takes the lead in selecting books for the library and procurement of instructional resources.
• Responsible for storytelling and library read aloud sessions.
• Organizes the library for maximum and effective use.
• Takes an active role in organizing and promoting literacy projects and events including but not limited to book fairs, literacy celebrations, and reading improvement programs that engage learners and motivate them to become lifelong readers.
• Works with classroom teachers to maximize the use of library and instructional resources for their students.
• Assists with planning for professional development opportunities within the school when appropriate.
• Works with Technology Teacher Specialist to engage students and to improve learning, providing access to digital information resources for the learning community.
• Ensures the school library program aligns with school strategic plans and the state and national program standards.
• Conducts ongoing evaluations that create data to inform program goals and continuous improvement.
• Oversees the organization and procurement of instructional/curricular materials in the resource center in conjunction with the curriculum specialists.
• Works with curriculum specialists in developing materials for the instruction resources center.
• May provide academic interventions, including but not limited to individual instructional plans and classroom instruction.
• Manages access to the museum.
• Maintains library bulletin boards and other spaces in the library such as display cases.
• May assist with and/or supervise study hall students, as well as other students sent to the library for various purposes as needed.

• Education and/or Experience: Master’s Degree in Deaf Education or a related field.

• Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret speech and language periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write evaluations and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from teachers and parents.

• Sign Language: American Sign Language skills at hire are favorable. The applicant must have some sign language skills and will be required to demonstrate progressive sign language acquisition and participate in sign language classes offered at NMSD if needed.

• Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute standard scores, percentile ranks, and age equivalents for evaluations based on standardization charts.

• Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

• Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, as well as various software packages including Microsoft Office.
