ASL Immersion Positions

 

ASL Immersion Teacher (Reports to ASL Program Coordinator)

The ASL Teacher provides instruction to adult learners in Levels 1-6 using the TRUE+WAY ASL Curriculum. The teacher delivers structured lessons that support ASL skill development and understanding of Deaf Culture in a group learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)

• Plan and deliver structured ASL instruction aligned with the TRUE+WAY Curriculum for Levels 1–6.
• Adapt lessons to meet the language proficiency of adult learners.
• Integrate Deaf Culture into instruction at all levels.
• Facilitate interactive activities, role-plays, and games to reinforce ASL language development.
• Monitor participant progress and provide feedback.
• Collaborate with program staff to continuously improve curriculum, materials, and instructional approaches.
• Participate actively in team meetings and program events as assigned.

 

Qualifications

• Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in ASL, Deaf Education, Linguistics, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
• Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and strong knowledge of Deaf Culture.
• Experience teaching ASL to adults or older learners (Levels 1–6 preferred).
• Ability to create engaging, interactive lesson plans and adapt instruction for varying skill levels.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive, ASL-rich learning environment.

ASL Immersion Aide (Reports to ASL Program Coordinator)

The ASL Immersion Aide supports ASL instruction for adult learners in Levels 1–6 within an ASL-rich learning environment. The aide reinforces language development and Deaf Culture learning by assisting with lessons, activities, and participant engagement, helping to ensure a dynamic and supportive classroom experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)

• Support the implementation of TRUE+WAY lessons for Levels 1–6 under the guidance of the lead teacher.
• Reinforce ASL skills through guided practice, small group support, and one-on-one assistance.
• Assist with preparation, setup, and organization of instructional materials and classroom activities.
• Help monitor ASL learner participation and progress, providing constructive feedback when appropriate.
• Support the integration of Deaf Culture into classroom activities and discussions.
• Assist in maintaining an immersive, inclusive, and ASL-rich environment.
• Participate in team meetings, staff development, and program events as assigned.

Qualifications

 

• Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or degree in ASL, Deaf Studies, or related field preferred.
• Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) with knowledge of Deaf Culture.
• Experience working with adult learners or in ASL educational settings preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage learners effectively.

Summer Camp Positions

Summer Camp General Summary: The overall purpose of the Summer Camp staff is to offer campers opportunities to engage in diverse outdoor activities, educational experiences, and social interactions. Staff members support the development of new friendships, skills, and language abilities, creating a positive environment that promotes growth, learning, and personal development.

3rd - 8th Grade Guide (Reports to 3^rd-8^th Grade Summer Camp Director)

• Responsible for organizing outdoor educational workshops/activities.
• Responsible for supervision and support of campers.
• Ensure campers’ safety and emotional well-being.
• Expose campers to world experiences, leisure opportunities, and ASL literacy.
• Other tasks may be assigned as needed.

 

Qualifications:

• Valid Driver’s License and current Defensive Drivers Certificate required.
• Experience working with children required.
• Strong outdoors/camping experience preferred.
• Able to swim and willingness to work with students in the water (pool/lake/river).
• CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
• Fluent in American Sign Language.

 

3^rd-8^th Grade Overnight Staff (Reports to 3^rd-8^th Grade Summer Camp Director)

• Do bed checks every 15 minutes throughout the night.
• Help campers get ready for the day’s activities with proper clothing.
• Support program with supervision, safety, and other activities as needed.
• Engage with campers in morning activities before and during breakfast).
• Ensure campers’ safety, emotional and well-being.
• Strong outdoors/camping experience preferred.
• Other tasks may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

• Willingness to work various hours. This position mostly works throughout the night.
• Experience in working with children required.
• Valid Driver’s License and current Defensive Drivers Certificate required.
• CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
• Fluent in American Sign Language.

 

3^rd-8^th Grade Cook (Reports to 3^rd-8^th Grade Summer Camp Director)

• Assist director with meal planning.
• Prepare meals and snacks.
• Ensure cleanliness of kitchen area.
• Support activities around meal events.
• Support the program with supervision and ensuring safety of campers.
• Strong outdoors/camping experience preferred.
• Other tasks may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

• Food Management certificate required.
• Valid Driver’s License and current Defensive Drivers Certificate required.
• Experience working with children required.
• Strong outdoors/camping experience preferred.
• CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
• Fluent in American Sign Language.

ECE Guide (Reports to ECE Summer Programs Director)

• Design and execute interactive activities for deaf/HH, and hearing children aged 18 months – 2nd grade (hearing children are of parents who participate in ASL Immersion classes).
• Responsible for supervision and support of campers.
• Ensure campers’ safety and emotional well-being.
• Ensure activities are engaging, educational, and age appropriate.

 

Qualifications

• Knowledge & experience working with younger children/toddlers.
• Valid driver’s license and current defensive drivers’ certification preferred.

 

 

ECE Guide Aide (Reports to ECE Summer Programs Director)

• Maintain a safe and supportive environment for all campers
• Assist the ECE Guide with implementation of activities
• Assist with preparation, set up, and clean up.
• Responsible for supervision and support of campers
• Ensure campers’ safety and emotional well-being
• Drive campers to/from NMSD (special assignment for some).

 

Qualifications

• Knowledge & experience working with younger children/toddlers.
• Valid driver’s license and current defensive drivers’ certification preferred (required for those who are assigned to drive campers to/from NMSD).
